Project Brief & Deliverables

  • Concept: I was asked to choose an area to study through an ethnographic perspective. An ethnographic study should always be based on what opportunities / problems you see and identify around you. What and how can I change the place / behavior / activity to improve the lives of the users?
  • Problem Discovery: During my ethnographic study I discovered a problem for a unique user, the hearing impaired. Through my research I found that most people that are hearing impaired have been extremely isolated and unhappy due to the pandemic is making it even harder for the to communicate with other people. When people wears masks they cannot lipread and those who are partly hearing impared struggle to hear what people are saying through their face masks. I conducted both User Interviews and Card Sorting before I could make an Empathy Map and confirm this problem.
  • Solution Discovery: After sketching 10 different low fidelity solutions to the problem it was clear to me that a speech to text recognition would be the best way to help the users read what the other person is saying, rather than trying to hear them. After including other designers in a Participatory Design Workshop we had a list of functions that I followed as I created my prototype.
  • Methodologies Applied: Empathy Map, User Interviews, Card Sorting, Design Workshops, Participatory Design.
